Several PSV players were back in action for their countries in the latest round of World Cup qualifiers this week. There were mixed fortunes, with Simons (Belgium) and Méndez (Ecuador) slipping to defeat. The Hungarian Dzsudzsák and Australian Culina were on the winning side. Salcido scored a goal for Mexico in their 2-2 draw with Canada.
Simons duffers defeat, Dzsudzsák enjoys victory
The Red Devils, with their captain Timmy Simons, started their World Cup qualifying game against European champions Spain brightly. Seven minutes were on the clock when former Ajax striker Wesley Sonck opened the scoring for the hosts. Andres Iniesta netted an equaliser and David Villa headed home Spain's winner two minutes from time. Spain are on top of Group Five with maximum points from four games. Belgium are third with seven points from four games and will be next in action on 28 March 2009, when they entertain Bosnia-Herzegovina. Santor Torghelle scored a goal midway the first half to help Hungary, who included Balázs Dzsudzsák in the starting line-up, to a 1-0 win at Malta. Hungary coach Erwin Koeman took off Dzsudzsák twenty minutes from time. Hungary are second in Group 1, following their 1-0 win, with seven points from four games. Denmark are in pole position for automatic qualification. They were not in action and also have seven points, having played one game less. Hungary will visit Albania for their next qualifying match on March 28, 2009. Danko Lazovic did not leave the bench as Serbia enjoyed a comfortable 3-1 away win against Austria. Milos Krasic, Milan Jovanovic and Ivan Obradovic got their names on the score sheet for Serbia, who sit joint top in Group Seven with nine points, level with Lithuania. Rumania v Serbia is scheduled for 28 March 2009.

Mexico were held to a 2-2 draw by Canada in Edmonton. The Mexicans came back twice to salvage a draw. Carlos Salcido played the full 90 minutes and scored a goal in the 34th minute. Matias Vuoso was also on target for Mexico, who are still on top of Group 2, with ten points from five games. They will face Honduras on19 November. Edison Méndez played the full match for Ecuador, but the midfielder could not prevent his team from slipping to a 3-1 defeat against Venezuela. Ecuador took the lead through Isaac Mina after ten minutes, but conceded three goals after the break. Ecuador sit sixth in their group, with twelve points from ten games. They will play host to Brazil on 28 March 2009 for their next World Cup qualifying game. Australia took a step towards qualification for the World Cup in South Africa in 2010 after a 4-0 rout of Qatar in Brisbane. Jason Culina played the entire match. Former Feyenoord Brett Emerson scored a double for Pim Verbeek's team, while Tim Cahill and Joshua Kennedy netted a goal each. The Socceroos moved top of Group One in the Asian World Cup qualifying with two straight wins. Bahrain v Australia is scheduled for Wednesday November 19, 2008.
