PSV have been knocked out of KNVB Cup after AZ inflicted a 1-0 defeat on them in extra time. AZ are through to the Round of 16, with Mendes da Silva scoring the decisive goal after 98 minutes. PSV were equal to AZ in an even game, but lacked cutting edge up front.
Three consecutive defeats
The goalless scoreline after 90 minutes led to extra time. AZ started a counter attack after 98 minutes and when David Mendes da Silva was in a shooting position, he struck a shot that beat PSV keeper Isaksson to secure passage for his team into the last 16 of the KNB Cup. PSV were left empty-handed for the third time in a row, after Nijland had had a great opportunity in the second half of extra time, and Afellay had sent a free kick wide. PSV did not succeed in scoring one single goal in their last three outings against Olympique Marseille, N.E.C. and AZ. Huub Stevens and his team will be next in action on Sunday when they make a trip to the Amsterdam ArenA to face leaders Ajax. The Amsterdam outfit crashed out of the Cup as they also suffered a 1-0 defeat, at bottom-of-the-table FC Volendam. Amateurs FC Lienden pulled off the greatest upset on Wednesday night with a 1-0 victory against Eredivisie side Vitesse.
Jan Kromkamp injury
PSV's defence was familiar, with Dirk Marcellis and Carlos Salcido forming a central defensive partnership and the full-back spots taken by Jan Kromkamp and Erik Pieters. Right back Jan Kromkamp sustained an injury after 25 minutes' play and was forced to be stretchered off. Maza came off the bench to replace him. He partnered countryman Salcido in the centre of defence and Marcellis took up the right back position. The teams were equal in a lively encounter and created some chances. Afellay and Méndez had shots on goal, while at the other end AZ won a number of corners in and Ari sent a header wide. As the first half wore on, Afellay volleyed a shot over the bar and Dzsudzsák, who did not put in a commanding display, took a free kick that went wide of the left-hand post. The Cup tie was similar to the league encounter in September, when PSV also started most moves in the second part of the first half. On the stroke of half time, Afellay, again, unleashed a shot that the Argentina keeper Romero managed to save. AZ got a golden opportunity to open the scoring when Dzsudzsák failed to mark his man and the home side produced goal threat, but PSV survived the scare.
Extra time
Afellay seemed to have sustained an injury in the early stages of the second half, but fortunately the midfielder could carry on. The game sparked into life and referee Braamhaar needed to show some players yellow cards to restore order. Neither team succeeded in breaking the deadlock, as chances were far and few between after the break. Koevermans had a chance on the hour mark and Marcellis could not finish when he was in a scoring position. The hosts dominated proceedings in the final twenty minutes of official time. Ari had a chance from a counter attack, while Swerts and El Hamdaoui had shots on target and the hosts won a number of corners. PSV survived a few anxious moments and Stevens brought on Lazovic for Koevermans. Afellay started a fine solo run but no forward was on hand to pounce on the rebound. With time running out, it became an end-to-end affair and both teams hoped to capitalise on a defensive error. De Zeeuw shot on goal, but Isaksson produced a fine save. At the other end, PSV threatened from a corner, as the cup tie went into extra time, following a goalless draw. Mendes da Silva had the final word, knocking PSV out of the KNVB Cup.
