After he had joined his new PSV team mates for his first training session in Eindhoven, 22-year-old Ola Toivonen was handed his shirt by PSV legend Willy van der Kuylen. The tall Swede then spoke for the first time to gathered press and told them that his first impressions had been very good.
New tradition at PSV
'Toivonen has been scouted a number of times by the entire scouting staff and the head coach', explained General Manager Jan Reker at the official presentation. 'He is a talented and versatile young player with many qualities. We are happy to have won the race for his signature. Toivonen has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract with an option for a further two seasons.' PSV legend Willy van der Kuylen subsequently handed the striker his first No 7 shirt, starting a new tradition that was launched before by South European clubs such as Real Madrid and Benfica.
'This has to sink in first'
Ola Toivonen admitted at his first press conference as a PSV player that it had been 'a very busy day.' 'Actually I have not had enough time to realise I am a PSV player. This has to sink in first. PSV are a big club. I spoke with FC Groningen striker Marcus Berg and he told me some very positive things about PSV.' PSV coach Huub Stevens said that Toivonen is not fully match fit yet. 'He has been training for two weeks now. I will talk with him after the Friday morning training session and see if we will find a way to fit him in the team.' The brand-new PSV player then went to the pitch in the Philips Stadium to pose for pictures.
