Australia took one giant step closer to World Cup qualification with a 2-0 win over Uzbekistan on Wednesday. A second-half Josh Kennedy header and a Harry Kewell penalty gave the Socceroos a hard-fought victory. Australia coach Verbeek had included PSV player Jason Culina in his starting line-up.

Joshua Kennedy headed home from a Mark Bresciano cross in the 66th minute and seven minutes later Harry Kewell converted a penalty. Australia have virtually ensured qualification for the World Cup 2010 in South Africa, having collected thirteen points from five matches. If Bahrain and Qatar share the points in a World Cup qualifying game later today, the Socceroos' place in South Africa can officially be booked.
