Hungary boosted their chances of qualifying for the World Cup 2010 in South Africa with a 3-0 victory against Malta. The team led by Erwin Koeman, who included PSV winger Balázs Dzsudzsák in the starting XI, are on top of qualifying Group 1, equal on points with Denmark, who have a game in hand. The Hungarians have opened up a seven-point lead over Portugal, but they have played one more than Portugal.
Dzsudzsák, Lazovic, Isaksson
After six minutes' play, Tamas Hajnal scored the opening goal for the hosts at the Ferenc Puskas Stadium in Budapest. Zoltan Gera scored a goal after 80 minutes and Roland Juhasz added a third in the fourth minute of stoppage time to make sure of a 3-0 victory. Dzsudzsák was included in the starting line-up and was taken off after 79 minutes. Hungary will be next in World Cup action on 5 September with a visit of Sweden. Sweden beat Serbia 2-0 in an international friendly on Wednesday night. Sweden goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson played the full game, while Serbia striker Lazovic was taken off at half-time.
Ecuador concede injury-time draw
Ecuador, with PSV midfielder Edison Méndez in their starting line-up, conceded an injury-time 1-1 equaliser against South American group leaders Paragay, who have 26 points from 12 games. With six matches remaining, Ecuador are lying seventh in their group. The top 4 teams qualify, the 5th placed team enters a home-and-away playoff with the 4th placed team from the North,Central America & Caribbean region, including Mexico. Ecuador return to World Cup action on 6 June when they face Peru.
