Brimming with confidence, Jason Culina reported for training with Gold Coast United, his new club in Australia. The 28-year-old former PSV player told the Sydney Morning Herald that he is not afraid his position in the national team is at risk, now that the Socceroos are moving towards the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Culina will play first match on 4 July
Culina said he has no fears about his high standards dropping in the A-league. Culina joined Gold Coast United as their key player heading into their inaugural A-League season kicking off in August. Australia coach Pim Verbeek has indicated before he prefers to field players that ply their trade in Europe rather than Australia. "I don't see it as a risk; it's all calculated and all my choices are made purely for football. I feel we are going to be successful and that's why I have chosen here. I've always been a player that's worked hard and given 100 per cent and my coming back here wouldn't be dropping in standard at all." Culina will play his first match for Gold Coast United in a friendly against the Hong Kong national team.
