FC Barcelona won the UEFA Champions League final in Rome on Wednesday, beating holders Manchester United 2-0. Barcelona have now joined four teams that have also won a trophy treble (the league title, the Cup and Champions League /European Cup) in one season, a feat that PSV achieved in the 1987/88 season.
Eto'o and Messi
Manchester United, chasing their fourth European title in Rome, were outplayed by Barcelona. The English side started the game brightly and Cristiano Ronaldo had three shots on goal in the first ten minutes, but other than that the Spaniards took control and dominated the game at the Stadio Olimpico. Samuel Eto'o put the Spanish champions ahead in the 10th minute. The Cameroon striker picked up Andres Iniesta's pass, cut inside Nemanja Vidic, and his shot beat Edwin van der Sar at the near post: 1-0. Lionel Messi sealed the game for Barcelona twenty minutes from time when he scored with a beautifully timed header from Xavi's cross; 2-0. Barcelona won the most prestigious club trophy in European for the third time, after lifting the trophy in 1992 and 2006, when they beat Sampdoria and Arsenal, respectively. In 1999, Manchester United won the treble, a feat that PSV had achieved in 1988, Ajax in 1972 and Celtic in 1967. So far, five clubs have won a trophy treble (the league title, the Cup and Champions League /European Cup) on one season.
