Rinus Michels, the legendary coach of the Dutch national football team, has died at the age of 77. A minute’s silence will be observed ahead of the PSV - TOP Oss cup tie in fond memory of Rinus Michels. Both sides will also wear black armbands during this quarter final cup tie.Michels died early this morning in the Belgian town of Aalst from the effects of heart surgery. The former player and coach of Ajax and the Dutch team was 77 years of age. Michels underwent heart surgery in Aalst nearly two weeks ago, during which a defect cardiac valve was replaced and measurements were taken for a pacemaker.Michels scored his greatest triumphs as a coach. He was coach of Ajax and won the European Cup I in the early seventies, after which he guided Barcelona to the national title for the first time since long. The Dutch team reached the 1974 World Cup final under his supervision, but lost 2-1 to Germany. He took revenge, though, in 1988, when the Dutch team won the European Championship title. And it was ‘The General’, known for his dry sense of humour and feared for his discipline, who guided his side to the only big trophy the Dutch team have ever won.
