PSV drew 0-0 with Borussia Mönchengladbach in a pre-season friendly, one week before the start of the new season in Holland, when the Johan Cruijff Shield is at stake. A crowd of 17.500 saw that neither team managed to break the deadlock in the beautiful Borussia Park. Wilfred BoumaPSV head coach Guus Hiddink played Wilfred Bouma in front of Alex and Simons, the partners in the heart of defence, just like he did in Korea. PSV fielded their possibly strongest starting line-up. Mika Väyrynen, who was not completely fit when the friendly was kicked off, limped off the pitch on 21 minutes. Theo Lucius came on to replace him. PSV did not create many chances in the first period. Vennegoor of Hesselink headed on target and Farfán produced a shot. The hosts threatened more and they cleverly outwitted the PSV defence a few times. Gladbach goal disallowedCocu and Robert earned some chances soon after the restart. The hosts were also close to scoring the opening goal, but when Marek Heinz found the net (he had fired the ball home when it fell to him), the goal was disallowed for off-side. As the second half wore on, Guus Hiddink brought on a few new players. John de Jong came on for Vennegoor of Hesselink and Afellay left the bench to take over from Robert. The Borussia crowd warmly welcomed the renowned striker Giovane Elber, who came on when Wesley Sonck had sustained an injury. PSV controlled the game, but as quite a few players were needed to win the battle in midfield, Farfán was a lone striker up front in the final fifteen minutes. It was a rather equally contested game, in which no goals were scored.PSV can now focus on the clash against Ajax in the Amsterdam ArenA next week, where they will attempt to start the new campaign well by winning the Johan Cruijff Shield.
